Configuration: General Options for Updated Entries

Postby Don Chambers » Sat Jan 10, 2009 1:18 pm

This tutorial will discuss the General Options for Updated Entries for Kinetic. As with all template options, enter the serendipity admin panel and select "Manage Styles" in the left sidebar. Options are numbered below for tutorial clarity, but are not actually numbered in the Theme/Style options page.

Sites featuring regularly updated content often provide visual clues to visitors that the entry article has been updated, as well as when, or how recently, the update occurred. The General Options discussed below provide the basic framework utilized by each content box type for entries that have been updated.

1) Grace Period. [input]
Amount of time, in seconds, that an entry can be modified but not considered updated. Default: 600 (10 minutes). It is recommended that this value be set to a reasonable setting to allow for minor revisions without triggering a visual indication that the entry's meaningful content has been updated or modified. An entry is never considered updated unless the Grace Period has elapsed.

2) Duration Period. [input]
Amount of time, in seconds, after an entry has been modified that it will no longer be considered updated if enabled by options that use this feature. Default: 604800 (7 days). The notion of an entry being "updated" is often relevant only for a short time after the actual modification. Defining a Update Duration period allows various visual clues to expire after a pre-determined amount of time has elapsed.

3) Prepend Update text to entry titles for updated entries. [select]
"UPDATED" text will precede the entry title. For example, "UPDATED: Your Entry Headline". The updated text provides an immediate visual indication of an entry update without changing the actual entry title.

Always: Updated text will never expire and will always precede the entry title.
Never: Updated text will never display.
Update Duration Period: Updated text will display until Update Duration Period has elapsed, then cease.

4) Updated Timestamp Format Threshold. [input]
Amount of time, in seconds, after an entry has been updated that timestamp format will change from Words to Dateformatting if enabled for the updated timestamp. Default: 604800 (7 days). "Words" means a verbal description of the time elapsed, such as "3 days ago", or "10 minutes ago". "Dateformatting" means a calendar representation, such as "Thursday, January 1, 2009". Each content box and entry view type determines if/when to use this Threshold.

5) Creation Timestamp Format Threshold. [input]
Amount of time, in seconds, after an entry has been created that timestamp format will change from Words to Dateformatting if enabled for the original post timestamp.
